Collection: Pregnancy/New Mumma's Health

What you put in your body before becoming pregnant, during your pregnancy and after the birth can affect your baby. Eating the right foods, what drinks to avoid, regular exercise and quitting smoking and alcohol are all important if you are to increase your chances of a healthy pregnancy.  Even your genes play a role with regards to the health of your newborn from infancy to adulthood.

Have you and your partner been tested for the MTHFR gene?  If you have his gene mutation then you will not convert folic acid into methylated folate.  It will build up in your body and be passed to your bubba.

Good nutrition during pregnancy can help to keep you and your developing baby healthy. Your need for certain nutrients (such as iron, iodine and folate - get tested for MTHFR before falling pregnant) increases when you are pregnant.

What you eat during pregnancy affects not only your own health and wellbeing and the development of your baby, but there is also substantial evidence that it can have a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of your child later in life.

Gaining an appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy helps your baby grow to a healthy size. But gaining too much or too little weight may lead to serious health problems for you and your baby.

Almost all women can and should be physically active during pregnancy. Regular physical activity may:

  • help you and your baby gain the appropriate amounts of weight
  • reduce backaches, leg cramps, and bloating
  • reduce your risk for gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
  • reduce your risk for postpartum depression.
