Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
Discover the Hidden Imbalances Behind Your Health Issues
Have you ever felt like something is off, but your blood tests keep coming back “normal”? If so, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it. The Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a powerful and non-invasive test that offers insights that regular blood work often misses. This simple test helps us uncover mineral imbalances, toxic heavy metal accumulation, and deeper metabolic dysfunctions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
At our clinic, HTMA is one of the foundational tools we use to get to the root cause of ongoing health issues.
What Is HTMA?
HTMA is a laboratory test that analyses a small sample of your hair to detect the levels and ratios of essential minerals and toxic heavy metals stored in your tissues over time.
Unlike blood tests, which show a snapshot of what’s happening in your body right now, HTMA gives us a longer-term picture—like looking through a window into your mineral reserves and toxin accumulation over the past 3–4 months.
What HTMA measures:
- Macrominerals: Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus
- Trace minerals: Zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, lithium
- Toxic heavy metals: Mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminium, uranium
- Mineral ratios: These show the balance between key minerals (e.g. calcium/magnesium, sodium/potassium, copper/zinc), which can give clues about adrenal function, thyroid health, blood sugar control, and more.
What Can HTMA Reveal?
HTMA is incredibly useful for detecting and understanding the following conditions:
Heavy Metal Toxicity
- Mercury, aluminum, arsenic, lead and cadmium accumulation (Lots more are detected but these are the common Heavy metals)
- Common in those with poor detox pathways, amalgam fillings, mold exposure, or chemical sensitivity
- Symptoms: Brain fog, fatigue, headaches, memory issues, behavioural concerns, mood swings, neurological symptoms
Mineral Imbalances
- Magnesium deficiency (common in anxiety, insomnia, muscle cramps)
- Zinc deficiency (linked to poor immunity, skin issues, low stomach acid)
- Copper excess or hidden copper toxicity (associated with anxiety, estrogen dominance, PMS, and ADHD)
Adrenal & Thyroid Function
- Sodium and potassium levels reflect adrenal strength and stress response
- Calcium and potassium ratios can reflect thyroid function
- HTMA often shows signs of adrenal burnout long before blood tests detect it
Metabolic Typing
- Slow vs fast metabolic types (indicates how quickly your body uses energy
- Helps determine the most suitable diet and supplement plan
Mood, Mental Health & Cognitive Function
- Imbalances in copper, zinc, and manganese can be linked to depression, anxiety, ADHD, and poor memory
- HTMA can guide us toward balancing neurotransmitters naturally
Chronic Fatigue and Burnout
- Often linked to low adrenal minerals like sodium and potassium, low magnesium, and high calcium
- Can show whether fatigue is nutritional, toxic, or metabolic in origin
Poor Detoxification
- If your body can't efficiently detox, toxins build up and minerals get depleted
- HTMA shows the burden and helps tailor a detox plan
Why I Use HTMA in My Clinic
As a Herbal Naturopath and Functional Medicine Practitioner, I rely on comprehensive tools to understand your body as a whole—not just isolated symptoms. HTMA is a critical part of my investigation because:
- It’s non-invasive (just a small hair sample)
- It helps personalise your herbal and nutritional treatment plan
- It often explains symptoms that conventional tests overlook
- It identifies your unique mineral blueprint—so we can restore balance, improve energy, support detoxification and resolve chronic issues from the inside out
Is HTMA Right for You?
If you experience any of the following, HTMA could be the test that finally gives you answers:
- Ongoing fatigue or burnout
- Anxiety, low mood or brain fog
- Hormonal imbalances or menstrual issues
- Skin issues like acne or eczema
- Poor immunity or frequent infections
- ADHD or learning difficulties (in children or adults)
- Digestive concerns
- Chemical or mold sensitivities
- History of amalgam fillings, smoking, or toxin exposure
- Or if you simply want to take a proactive step towards better health
