Collection: Respiratory Health
The respiratory system brings oxygen into your body and helps to remove carbon dioxide.
Parts of the respiratory system are: Nose, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), bronchi (airways branching from the trachea and leading to smaller bronchioles and the lungs.
You breathe air in and out through your nose and mouth. This air is warmed and moistened along the way. The air passes through your larynx, then to the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi to reach your lungs. In your lungs, the air sits in small air sacs called alveoli. Oxygen from the air you breathe in travels from your alveoli into your bloodstream. Carbon dioxide travels the other way, from your bloodstream into your alveoli. You then breathe the carbon dioxide out.
Some examples of conditions that can affect the respiratory system include: Asthma, bronchitis, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), hay fever, laryngitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, croup bronchiolitis and other lung conditions.
Many viruses and infections can cause respiratory illnesses. Common infections include colds, influenza (the flu) and COVID 19.
